Spotting Problems Early

Noticing signs of disease in nursery pigs is easier with the Farmweld Flooring System, according to Gary Lawyer of Shirley, IN. Lawyer and his wife, Lisa, contracted with Bellar Construction, of Peru, IN, to build a 5,000-head nursery last year. They installed the Farmweld nursery package, including the Farmweld Flooring System, Farmweld Challenger Nursery Feeders and Farmweld gating.

The Lawyers, who are contract nursery growers for Lewis Pork of Greenfield, IN, say Farmweld’s orange panels "brighten up" the pens compared to nurseries with black flooring. "The pigs really stand out, and you can catch any problems earlier," says Gary, who shares daily nursery duties with Lisa.

The orange plastic flooring also aids in thorough cleanup between groups. The smooth surface is easy to clean and with the bright color, "you can see if you missed any spots during power-washing," Gary says.

The Farmweld Flooring System provides a smooth, warm surface for the pigs to rest. And the Challenger Nursery Feeders are easy for weanlings or larger, growing pigs to access. "The pigs are doing extremely well (in the nursery) and seem to be pretty comfortable," Gary observes.
