Lack of uniformity is the number one cost to the swine
industry, according to the 2003 National Pork Quality Audit by the National
Pork Board. It is estimated that producers lose an average of $1-3 per head
due to sort losses alone. FAST II enables producers to accurately
select market pigs within their packer’s specific preferred weight
range.
FAST II also helps producers do a better
job of feeding pigs, and contributes to improving meat quality. It improves
space efficiency, pen utilization and reduces the labor of sorting, loading
and cleaning.
A FAST II pen is designed for approximately 500-750
pigs. One super-sized pen is divided into a loafing area and one or more
food courts. Pigs learn to walk through the FAST II scale to get to
the feeders in the food courts. The scale’s exit gate directs the pig
to the “heavy” or the “light” food courts.
FAST II barns require minimal alleyways
so producers gain approximately 60 additional pig spaces versus traditional
barns. The added production space makes it very economical to install FAST
II technology.
